What's involved in using it
- Every company's accounts arrive as their own separate tagged document rather than rows in a spreadsheet, so turning them into a table you can analyse needs specialist software to read the financial figures out of each one.
- The files balloon enormously when unpacked — a single day's download becomes several gigabytes of thousands of tiny files — so processing a full year is a serious data-engineering job, not a desktop exercise.
- Only about 60% of all company accounts are in here (the ones filed electronically), so it's never a complete picture of every company, and the smallest firms filing on paper are missing.
Worth knowing before you start
- This is the hardest dataset here to work with: filings are iXBRL documents, not a tidy table, and getting them into rows takes a specialist parser.
- Small and micro-entity accounts are legally allowed to omit turnover and profit — for most SMEs you will get a balance sheet and little else.
- Coverage is electronic filings only (~60% of all accounts). Paper and revised accounts are absent.
- The files expand roughly 85× when unzipped — one day of filings is about 7 GB extracted. Read them inside the zip.
- Monthly archives include the same filings as that month's daily files — use one or the other, or you will double-count.
