What's involved in using it
- The data arrives as thousands of separate monthly files — one for each police force, each month — so before you can look at your own area you have to gather and stack them all together into one set.
- Crime locations are deliberately nudged to nearby anonymised points rather than exact addresses, so it's reliable for comparing streets and neighbourhoods but can't pinpoint a specific building.
- Crimes are labelled by small statistical neighbourhood, not by postcode, so you need a free postcode lookup to connect them to your own sites or customers.
Worth knowing before you start
- Locations are deliberately anonymised to nearby 'snap points' — reliable for street and area analysis, not for pinpointing exact addresses.
- Scotland is not included — Police Scotland publishes separately.
- Recording practices differ between police forces, so compare trends within a force rather than raw counts across forces.
