What your business can use it for

Sales prospecting

Reach the UK's large employers — every organisation over 250 staff, with industry and location — a ready-made target list for anyone selling to bigger businesses.

Territory planning

Count the large employers in each area and sector, so you size and carve up sales patches on where the big organisations actually are.

Market analysis

Track pay and workforce make-up across an industry or region over eight years of consistent reporting — useful context for HR, recruitment and advisory firms.

Works with data you already have

  • Company numbers Company numbers
Zero-pad to 8 digits before joining to Companies House; not populated for some public-sector bodies
  • Employer postcodes Postcodes
Each employer carries a postcode you can join to any postcode-keyed dataset
  • Industry codes (SIC) Industry codes (SIC)
A multi-value field — split the cell before joining to the SIC hierarchy

How to get it

What's involved in using it

  • There is one file per reporting year since 2017, so building any trend means gathering and stacking around ten separate files and matching each employer across them.
  • Each employer's industry codes are packed several into a single cell, and the company number needed to link to other business data is sometimes missing and needs reformatting to match.

Worth knowing before you start

  • Employers with 250 or more staff only. This is a large-employer subset, not all companies — a business being absent does not mean it is small.
  • The company number is not always filled in, especially for public-sector bodies, so a slice of rows will not join to Companies House.
  • The pay figures are a snapshot from early April; the report itself can be filed up to a year later, so treat the snapshot date and the submission date as different things.
  • Some eligible employers report late or not at all, so a single year is not a complete census of large employers.
  • The industry-code field can hold several SIC codes in one cell — split it before filtering by sector.
